5. L.A.'s high-style high-rise

For a select group of Angelenos, the route to grandma's didn't go over the river and through the woods, but along Sunset to a 32-story Modernist block of stucco and glass built in 1964, a singular apartment house set back from and above the storied boulevard. Throughout the 1970s and '80s, encounter anyone under 60 in an elevator at Sierra Towers, and you'd assume they were visiting an older relative.

  7. A lot like Kate Moss

UNLIKE the closets of most style celebrities, Kate Moss' coveted wardrobe is not about her turn on the red carpet or her image peering out from the cover of almost every fashion magazine. For Moss it's those moments in between all the glamour that are indeed her most glamorous ones.

  11. A battle of the Hollywood salons is shaping up

YOU WOULD think they were talking about a defaced historical landmark, the way the gossip was going: "The place used to be so serene, I didn't even mind that it took three hours to get my hair done," said one highlighted regular of the John Frieda Salon on Melrose Place. "I loved it before they redid it. Now it looks like a coke den," chirped another.

  15. Model Gerren Taylor's short but stunning fashion career seen in 'America the Beautiful'

GERREN TAYLOR was still playing with Barbie dolls when she walked the runway for the first time at Los Angeles Fashion Week in 2003. Just 12 at the time, she was the youngest person ever to be represented by the runway division of L.A. Models. Although most agencies require girls to be 14, it's not unheard of for 12-year-olds to get work. Actress Milla Jovovich made the cover of Vogue at 12, and Brooke Shields, Gisele Bündchen and Kate Moss were all stars before they turned 16.

  17. British comedian Russell Brand tries to conquer America

Clad head to toe in skin-tight Johnny Cash black, Russell Brand mounted the stage at Hollywood's venerable rock venue the Roxy Theatre on a recent Sunday looking every inch the louche, preening British rock star of archetype. His haystack of "Edward Scissorhands"-esque hair: impressively vertical. His winkle-picker boots: pointy and sharp. Brand's shirt was unbuttoned nearly to his waist, revealing a cluster of silver Gypsy medallions as he looked up to face the capacity crowd.

  19. Fall fashion: A collection's best accessory? Imagination

EVERY FALL, I sit down with stacks of magazines and look books and flip through them with a pair of scissors in hand, clipping things that jump out at me. I'm thinking about the season for my job, yes, but also for myself. A stylist uses clothes and accessories the way a painter uses paint, blending the season's new ideas into an existing wardrobe. The fun is in learning how to make the trends work for you and maybe even starting a few of your own.

  23. N.Y.'s Opening Ceremony debuts L.A. store

WITH so many chic boutiques now dotting the city, it's not easy dragging out the stylists, editors and "it" kids who will broadcast big buzz. But when the store has a cult following like New York sensation Opening Ceremony, opening night of its L.A. outpost last week was reason enough for these folks to turn out in killer style. Between the cool crowd and the inspired retail concept, the party ranked among the season's big events — without the million-dollar budget or red carpet. There were the Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and Jeremy Scott. Charlotte Froom tied an Hermès scarf into a hobo knapsack and let it hang from her pale shoulder, while Ezra Wood turned up the collar of his check jacket, evoking Ducky from "Pretty in Pink."
