    Bass, drums, and a rapper. It's unsettling how simple Political Animals' hip-hop is. Unsettling because they're stripped-down even compared to their underground peers. (Fellow CT underground rappers Sketch tha Cataclysm and Duece Bug have recently been performing with full bands — we're talking brass and percussionists and backup singers.) Unsettling because even the Roots, Philly's live instrument hip-hop innovators, are lately prone to go in the direction of overkill.
