1. Fereshta Kazemi takes a risky stand for acting in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Coarse mud was clinging to Fereshta Kazemi's high-heeled boots as she tottered on a slippery footpath. No one noticed. Everyone was staring at her legs.

  3. Storytelling on L.A.'s skid row

Once a week for the last several years, I've driven to skid row to visit a friend. I get depressed about the area at times because it's such a depository of the unfortunate and the forgotten. But then I'll catch a warm greeting, or see a sign of hope in someone trying to crawl out of a hole they thought they'd never escape.

  7. Review: 'West of Memphis' makes strong case

For astonishing injustice put to rest at long last, the holiday moviegoer has at least two options. One: "Les Misérables." And two: "West of Memphis," a strong, blood-boiling documentary from director Amy Berg, who made the similarly fine "Deliver Us From Evil," about a defrocked Catholic priest's appalling crimes and those of his protectors.

  11. Songs hope to hit a high note at Oscars again

The Academy Awards haven't been kind to songs of late. The last few years, the category has been treated as an after-thought, with either one film dominating the slate of nominees or voters struggling to find five songs worthy of contention.

  17. Review: 'The Law in These Parts' takes on Israel's legal system

"The Law in These Parts" sounds like the title of a routine western, maybe something starring Tom Mix or Johnny Mack Brown, but it turns out to be considerably more compelling and provocative.

  23. 'West of Memphis' full of real-life twists and turns

One might assume that a story already covered by a trilogy of documentaries, numerous books, countless articles and with a trail of celebrity supporters including Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines had already earned enough attention. The young men known as the West Memphis Three — Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley — became modern-day folk heroes as the story of their imprisonment over the graphic, sensational 1993 murders of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Ark., spread during their nearly two decades in jail.
