1. 'Chainsaw' producer likes being underestimated

Many industry pundits underestimated the prospects of "Texas Chainsaw 3D," the horror tale that finally knocked "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" from the top spot at the box office. Expected to gross about $16 million in its debut, the Leatherface sequel fared much better than predicted, selling an estimated $23 million of tickets.

  5. Review: A disappointing 'Allegiance' goes AWOL

Set in 2004, against the backdrop of a National Guard unit being called up for active duty in Iraq, "Allegiance" is an intermittently compelling but ultimately disappointing drama that loses track of its own point of view in favor of more generic storytelling.

  7. From 'World War Z' to 'Star Trek,' six story lines to watch in 2013

Predicting the biggest film stories months ahead of time is a fool's errand – last year at this time few were talking about Aurora or “Zero Dark Thirty.” Yet we here at Movies Now, along with many of our counterparts, make these kinds of predictions every year, because it helps us clarify the year ahead and because not to do so could result in the revocation of our blog card.

Despite possessing a rather unassuming sound -- one built on gentle acoustic strumming and comforting harmonies -- local act the Milk Carton Kids have had a rather booming year and a half. Two self-released albums published straight-to-the-Web are said to have racked-up more than 130,000 downloads, and artists such as acoustic stars the Old Crow Medicine Show and the Punch Brothers have taken the Hotel Cafe regulars on tour.

  15. New year's pot scrubbing

I am not known for my dish washing skills, which I have to admit is somewhat deliberate. When I was a kid, my mother used to turn dishwashing into a military operation. My sister and I had to don thick blue rubber gloves in order to deal with the boiling hot water. And, of course, being sisters, we’d bicker over who would do what.

  23. 'Promised Land': Drilling drama lacks depth, critics say

In the new eco-drama "Promised Land," co-writers and co-stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski take on the hot-button issue of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," through which chemicals are pumped into the ground to extract natural gas. Damon plays an ace corporate salesman trying to buy up drilling rights in a Pennsylvania farm town, and Krasinski plays an anti-fracking activist.
