  1. A bill for 17 porn films in 4 days? Now that's obscene

Carol Scott's idea of unwinding at home is ordering a movie from Time Warner Cable's pay-per-view service, maybe a nice romantic comedy or an engaging mystery.
Carol Scott's idea of unwinding at home is ordering a movie from Time Warner Cable's pay-per-view service, maybe a nice romantic comedy or an engaging mystery. It's not watching tons of porn. So Scott, 52, a healthcare lawyer for a prominent Los Angeles...

  3. The Petraeus affair: unscripted and simply scandalous

It's "Homeland" meets "The Real Housewives" — and it's hands down the best serialized show on TV.
It's "Homeland" meets "The Real Housewives" — and it's hands down the best serialized show on TV. It's "Dallas" in military drag, in which a ridiculously retro social order (who knew that "socialites" and "hostesses" even existed anymore, never...

  5. Theater review: 'Helen' is remade into a lively movie queen

Just a few years after writing his antiwar masterpiece, "The Trojan Women," Euripides was even more despondent about the reckless imperialist course of Athenian foreign policy. His response wasn't a louder shriek of lament but a rollicking romantic melodrama — escapist fare, really, but with a radical Euripidean twist.

  7. Classic Hollywood: The movies at work

As far back as Louis Lumière's 1895 "Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory in Lyon" 46-second short, work has been a central theme in motion pictures.¶There have been stark dramas about officer workers as drones (King Vidor's 1928 "The Crowd"), satires (Charlie Chaplin's 1936 "Modern Times"), angry explorations of the hardships of unemployment (John Ford's 1940 "The Grapes of Wrath") and the dangers of certain occupations (Ford's 1941 "How Green Was My Valley" about miners) or political statements such as 1979's "Norma Rae," which examined the struggle to unionize a factory. More recent films such as 1999's "Office Space" have skewered the world of bored computer drones. ¶ So in honor of Labor Day, here are some of the best Hollywood films about the workplace, whether it's an office, a farm — or even the circus.

  11. Best movies of 2012: 'Argo,' 'Lincoln,' 'Dark Knight Rises,' more

If the movies are a feast or famine business — and they are — we are in the heart of the feast at the moment. Both the studios and the smaller distributors, having hidden away their strongest films like squirrels hoarding especially tasty nuts, release them all in a rush in the last months of the year.

  15. Review: 'Much Ado About Nothing' in fine form at Shakespeare OC

Some odd quirks and remnants of wit adorn “Much Ado About Nothing,” which closes Shakespeare Orange County’s 21st season in beautifully appointed, crowd-pleasing, curiously off-kilter fashion.

  19. Television review: 'Liz & Dick' romance fizzles in graceless biopic

An epic love story, like a good horror movie, relies more on possibility than actuality. Surprise and anticipation, of what is to come and what it might mean, are what draw viewers in, binding them in fetters of pleasure and pain. Subtlety and nuance create the space between word and glance, between shadow and revelation, where imagination digs in and magnificence blooms.
