9. CD of the Week: Father's Children's 'Who's Gonna Save the World?'

Driven by a blend of Islam, Afro-mysticism and early-'70s end-times fervor, D.C.'s Father's Children made conscious soul with layered doo-wop vocals. It was a mix of Gil Scott-Heron-ish urban poet preaching, "Ball of Confusion" harmonies and ambitious Earth Wind and Fire jazz-funk flourishes. Only thing was no one ever really heard it. The band's one major release died a quiet death at the end of the decade. Now the archivist/scholar/crate-diggers at the Numero Group have unearthed the band's early recordings, releasing a batch of tracks that touch on crushing poverty, the blessings of Allah, war, the apocalypse and other subjects. One tune takes a regrettable stab at Santana-style Latin-psych-rock and the harmonies reveal imperfections in places, but any fan or student of soul music and post-'60s black culture will find plenty to dig into. Expect to hear this one sampled by some astute and intrepid hip-hop artist.
