1. Coachella 2012: Parties at Ace, Saguaro and more

Trying to keep up with the party scene at Coachella is like trying to keep track of Snoop Dogg's Twitter feed. He's got 7 million followers and more than 9,000 tweets and you've got, like, 10 million parties to go to in the next two weekends. You'll be hopping from pool to pool in your finest gold lamé swimsuit from the moment you arrive in the heat of Indio on Friday until the Doggfather and Dr. Dre close down the main stage at the end of the festival on Sunday night 10 days later.

  9. Lost L.A.: Huntington's private tribute to wife Arabella

Power, money and love fuel extravaganzas. Railroad millionaire Henry E. Huntington had all three and used them in the closing decade of his life to build his eponymous San Marino library and gardens. You know the mansion, the cactus and the Japanese tea house. What you may not know is that Huntington's estate once had a gallery dedicated to his wife, Arabella.

  21. Book review: 'Driven West'

The genocidal removal of Native Americans from their ancestral homelands is one of the most shameful episodes in American history. Over and over, A.J. Langguth reports in his unfocused but nonetheless scarifying account, U.S. presidents proclaimed that it would be terribly wrong to force entire tribes to move simply because white settlers wanted their territory — but added that it would be nice if the Indians would voluntarily relocate west of the Mississippi. Once Andrew Jackson became president in 1829, pretense about resettlement being voluntary quickly faded. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 didn't directly authorize seizing land, but the Southern states hungrily eyeing autonomous Indian nations on their borders took it as license to do just that. Georgia's Cherokee Code annexed almost all Cherokee lands and declared that any Indian who resisted Jackson's removal policy would be subject to arrest.
