  1. The Siren's Call: Fragile wiring

Most consumer reviews of the iPad mention, among other things, its sleek design — and just what does sleekness mean? To our friend, Merriam-Webster, sleekness refers to being "smooth and shiny …glossy, as a highly polished surface."

  15. 'The Last Brother' by Appanah

This deeply affecting work, first published in French in 2007, is the fourth novel by Nathacha Appanah, a journalist who grew up in Mauritius. All of her novels deal with injustice — the injustice of poverty, class, indentured Indian workers in Mauritius and, in "The Last Brother," the terrible suffering of two young boys.

  17. Changing course mid career

Life often takes unexpected twists and turns, as it did for Jeff Henry, 29, of Huntington Beach. Henry always knew he wanted to be a teacher. He was a volunteer coach in a youth program and quickly realized teaching went hand in hand with coaching. With a bachelor's degree and teaching credential from Vanguard University, Henry got a job as a math teacher in a Santa Ana high school. He soon found out that he was not suited for the job. "I tried hard to motivate the kids, but with little parent involvement, it was hard watching kids fail out of school," Henry recalled. "I took it on as my own failure."
