  1. Rachel Maddow's election eloquence

    Liz Smith
"NOBODY WOULD listen to me if I expressed this thought and hope, but I am putting this away in an envelope and I believe Barack Obama will win the election with a big surprise vote. I hope I am right. I will only open this envelope after the election!"...

  3. MSNBC editorializes, CNN reports at moment of Obama victory

    The Baltimore Sun
It was fairly obvious by about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday that most cable and network analysts thought President Obama was going to be re-elected. But they didn't have the data to make the call until 11:17. When that happened at NBC News and CNN, viewers were...

  5. What's Behind the War on Big Bird?

It was such a weird, seemingly off-the-cuff remark by Mitt Romney in the first debate: that of all the items in the budget an axe-wielding privatizing plutocratic president could hack away at, he pointed to a children’s television show and the debate moderator, Jim Lehrer (who certainly deserves to be fired from something).

  9. Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford Featuring the Work of Graphic Novelist Mark Siegel

Writing is frustrating work. Add pictures to the story, and watch your hair get even whiter with each passing pronoun. Author/illustrator Mark Siegel survived the process of creating a graphic novel, <em>Sailor Twain</em>, and he'll be appearing at (naturally) Hartford's Mark Twain House and Museum on Oct. 6 to talk about it. It's a serial work, published incrementally online over the course of weeks and months. But now the whole work &mdash; set in moody charcoal tones (pictured) and blending Victorian-era styles with progressive science fiction &mdash; will be released in paperback form this fall. It's received raves from &mdash; get this &mdash; author John Irving and MSNBC personality Rachel Maddow. Head to the Twain House for some art-fiction hybrid action.

Apparently MSNBC's Rachel Maddow doesn't regard Pennsylvania's Pat Toomey as a national figure.

Apparently MSNBC's Rachel Maddow doesn't regard Pennsylvania's Pat Toomey as a national figure. The liberal talk show host included the Republican U.S. senator among four lawmakers she said are anonymous to most Americans but should be held responsible...

  13. Here's where to go for the best GOP convention TV

Forget the broadcast networks of ABC, NBC and CBS.
    The Baltimore Sun
Forget the broadcast networks of ABC, NBC and CBS. And forget PBS, too, unless you are part of the minority that doesn't have cable or online access. Public television simply doesn't have the resources any longer to do any kind of original, first-rate...

  23. Crime & Punishment: Woman accused of third DUI goes to court drunk

<strong>"I stand here today speaking to the person responsible for this," </strong>Alexandra Pennell said to a rally gathered in response to anti-gay messages slipped beneath the door of her dorm room at Central Connecticut State University, "and all I have to say is I'm not going to be run out of my home and I will not be intimidated by hate." Pennell, a 19-year-old openly gay student, didn't have to look far for the culprit. Police were suspicious of the eight notes she turned in and put two cameras outside her door, one she knew about and the other she did not. The second camera reportedly caught Pennell disabling the first and dropping the notes herself. She later confessed, saying she did it because her roommate was not spending enough time with her, reports the <em>Hartford Courant</em>. (She's been arrested on tampering charges and expelled from the school.) Still, we'll count this as a win for equality as it proves a lesbian can act as crazy and clingy as heterosexual women do.
