1. Cannes 2013: Critics tell Jerry Lewis he's no expert on comedy

Given that he hasn’t had a good joke since Eisenhower was in the White House, Jerry Lewis probably shouldn’t have complained that he doesn’t find female comedians funny.

  7. Global Voices: Palestinian quest for statehood a moving target

In the 65 years since the creation of Israel and the scattering of millions of Palestinians from their historic homeland, hope of resolving the core crisis of the Middle East has risen to joyous pinnacles like Camp David and crashed into despair with deadly outbreaks of violence and bloodshed.

  13. Seeing what there is to see, and hearing too much, at Angel Stadium

It's another hymn of an evening down here in Anaheim, the French Riviera of freeways. Took a mere two hours to drive from L.A., which exceeds the capacity of many bladders. Fortunately, the kid in the back seat fell asleep in Azusa of all places, or the trip might've verged on the unpleasant.

  19. Scientists create human embryos to make stem cells

For the first time, scientists have created human embryos that are genetic copies of living people and used them to make stem cells — a feat that paves the way for treating a range of diseases with personalized body tissues but also ignites fears of human cloning.

  21. Dr. Christian de Duve dies at 95; Nobel-winning scientist

For the first half of the 20th century, the cell was a mysterious, unfathomable entity. Nutrients went in and hormones, wastes and other products came out. But what happened in between was anybody's guess.

If any line item in the state or federal budgets cries out for more resources, or even just a little more respect, it's the arts and humanities. Never mind that many writers, artists and scholars have the fresh ideas that our times so desperately need. When politicians and columnists call for increased spending on STEM projects — that's science, technology, engineering and mathematics — don't they know they're alienating at least half the country?
