  1. Sam Ekwurtzel's "On the Beach" on Display at Real Art Ways

    New London artist Sam Ekwurtzel blurs the lines between sculpture and seafaring with <em>On the Beach</em>, an exhibit appearing at Real Art Ways until mid-August. Ekwurtzel's large-scale designs (that's one pictured above), made out of native white pine, brownstone, cast iron and concrete shaped with some home-made and crude equipment, were inspired by his adventures in boat-building, engineering and navigation. His sculptures have appeared in galleries in NYC, Richmond, Va. and Louisville, Ky.

  8. Real Art Ways in Hartford Examines Fungus as an Artistic Medium

    Artist Phil Ross and Connecticut based mycologist Connie Borodenko will mediate a conversation about fungus (see above) as an artistic medium and sustainable architecture at Real Art Ways on March 16. Borodenko is an expert in mycology (the scientific study of fungi) and Ross specializes in art driven by a longtime love of biology. They'll discuss fungi's role in art, and the ways it can be adapted as an architectural medium. Fungal art is a slow, time-consuming process that requires strict environmental regulation and countless hours of experimentation.     In her humorous stage piece <em>Preparation for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome</em>, Knight Fellow and Creative Capital Grant recipient Michelle Ellsworth (pictured) dares to ask, "What will be missed when men have disappeared?" Good question, really, one that could be addressed in a number of ways (toilets seats that never lift?). Of course, Ellsworth has her own solutions, based on her intricate websites and spreadsheets, art and performance backgrounds and teaching experience. Real Art Ways hosts the show, which should draw experimental theater enthusiasts from all over the Greater Hartford area.
