Edmondson coach Dante Jones has been named Ravens’ High School Football Coach of the Week after leading the Red Storm to the regional championship and a berth in this weekend’s state Class 2A semifinals.

Jones has taken the Red Storm to the state semifinals six times since 1999 with a championship in 2006. The Red Storm advanced with last week’s 12-6 win over Dundalk for the 2A North region title – their second straight close game after holding off Baltimore City rival Douglass, 14-10, in the regional opener.

Against Dundalk, the Red Storm (10-2) did not score until the third quarter and took its first lead in the fourth. Eric Tate tied the game at 6 with an 18-yard touchdown run and Marcellus Pack returned an interception 42 yards for the winning touchdown.

The Red Storm, whose defense has allowed only four opponents two touchdowns or more, will host Douglass-PG in the state semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. at Poly. A win would send them to the title game Saturday, Dec. 1 at M&T Bank Stadium.

“We know we have to come into practice and work harder this week,” Jones said in a news release. “We’re going to review what we did wrong against a good Dundalk team and improve in those areas. We have to work on not coming out so flat and having a little more fire underneath of us."

Jones is the 10th Ravens' Coach of the Week this fall, joining Kent Island’s Byron Sofinowski, Mount St. Joseph’s Blake Henry, Dunbar’s Lawrence Smith, Milford Mill’s Reggie White, Francis Scott Key’s Dave Smith, C. Milton Wright’s Marc Alegi, Old Mill’s Chad McCormick, Atholton’s Kyle Schmitt and Mount Hebron’s Phil Zacharias.

This is the 16th year for the Ravens' Coach of the Week award. Each week a different high school coach will be honored with a $2,000 donation to his school’s football program, a certificate and a Coach of the Week hat. Each weekly winner also will be featured in a Comcast SportNet segment.

All of the winners will be invited to the Ravens' Dec. 16 home game against the Denver Broncos, where the Ravens' High School Coach of the Year will be named.
