“They went in just to look and repair a couple of minor things, so everything in there was good news," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Thursday. “The anterior cruciate ligament is really good and the PCL looks like it’s going to heal. A couple things they did wanted to clean up. Nothing from the procedure was going to set back the recovery time.”
Betemit injured his right knee while running the bases during a Grapefruit League game March 25, falling to the ground in pain between first and second base. At the time, Showalter feared the injury might be worse.
“The prospects for a full recovery are good,” Showalter said. “It wasn’t an injury specific surgery. It was to make sure and there were some things they wanted to clean out. They didn’t say anything about loose bodies.”
The procedure was done in Baltimore and performed by team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens.
Also of note:
-- Top prospect Dylan Bundy has been placed on the seven-day minor league disabled list with tightness in his right elbow. Showalter said Bundy has resumed throwing. The organization sees Bundy’s DL stint as purely precautionary. Bundy had previously had an MRI that showed no structural damage and just a sore muscle.
-- The Orioles claimed right-hander Josh Stinson off waivers from the Oakland A’s and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk, the team announced Thursday. The 25-year-old Stinson was claimed by Oakland on Friday after spending this spring with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 10 relief appearances. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada to the 60-day DL. Stinson has made 20 major league appearances – all but one in relief -- over the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Mets and Brewers, going 0-2 with a 4.43 ERA.
-- Right-hander Steve Johnson, who is on the DL on with a lat strain, began a long-toss throwing progression and had no complaints.
-- Showalter was mum on what corresponding 25-man roster move the team will have to make before Saturday’s game to activate right-hander Chris Tillman – that night’s starter – from the disabled list.
