Detectives called it a "crime of opportunity."
On the day before Ash Wednesday, the Kindle was snatched from an unlocked car in a Jack-in-the-Box parking lot.
A few days later, selfies of two people appeared in the online photo account linked to the device.
“The Ash Wednesday part is important, because you can see the woman in the picture has ashes on her forehead, which tells us the pictures were taken the day after the theft,” Los Angeles police Det. Mark Pearce said in a statement.
The theft occurred about 3:45 p.m. at the fast-food restaurant in the 16800 block of Vanowen Street in Lake Balboa, police said.
