European ban on seal products is upheld; now stop the cruel seal hunt

Just as the gruesome annual Canadian seal hunt is winding down, the World Trade Organization has once again upheld the European Union’s policy of banning the commercial trade in seal products in EU countries. That was the right decision, even though it will probably invite more litigation. At issue was whether the EU could ban the trade in seal products that were the result of commercial hunting and selling — but have an exemption for indigenous communities such as the Inuit, which hunt seals, primarily for meat and for subsistence.
