A wind advisory has been extended until 6 p.m. today for the Chicago area.
WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling said gusts of 60 mph were recorded at Midway Airport. That the strongest winds registered there "since a July 24, 2012 t-storm in which 65 mph gusts were clocked," he tweeted.
Winds of 54 mph were recorded at Harvard, 52 mph at Lombard and 49 mph at O'Hare International Airport.
The National Weather Service warned that the high winds could create hazards for drivers, particularly those in large vehicles.
