The big shootings still find their own awful way of hitting him. When he heard about the massacre of 26 children and adults in Newtown, Conn., in 2012, Tom Mauser fled to his office and cried. Two Saturdays ago, Mauser was at home when his wife, Linda, called out, "Tom, did you hear what happened?" "What now?" Mauser responded.
