Edgy's 5 games to watch breakdown | Week 8

Mount Carmel vs. St. Rita

When: 7 Friday, Gately Stadium.

Records: St. Rita (4-3, 0-2 Catholic Blue), Mount Carmel (6-1, 1-1).

On the offensive

St. Rita has been dealing with injuries all season, none as costly as to QB John Kelley, who is back and had the Mustangs clicking in last week's 35-7 victory against Bishop McNamara. As usual, the Mustangs look to run behind a solid lineMount Carmel is led QB Don Butkus Jr., who runs the bellly option with RB Matt Domer and RB/DB Draco Smith (Northern Illinois).

On the defensive

The Caravan have allowed just 64 points. Keep an eye on DT Enoch Smith Jr., DT Steve Richardson and a deep group of linebackers. St. Rita senior LB Jack Sears leads a quick and athletic group.

The talk

St. Rita needs a win this week or next week against Loyola to qualify for the state playoffs. Mount Carmel has lost four in a row to the Mustangs.

The number: 1999.

Last time St. Rita didn't qualify for the IHSA playoffs.

Edgy's pick: Mount Carmel 27-25.

I have a feeling the Mustangs will make this one as interesting, as usual.

Wheaton North at Glenbard North

When: 7:30 Friday.

Records: Wheaton North (7-0, 5-0 DuPage Valley), Glenbard North (6-1, 5-0).

On the offensive

Wheaton North has made its two-QB system work with Johnny Peltz sharing reps with Clayton Thorson. When one plays QB, the other is at receiver. North also has a solid running game, led by RB Patrick Sharp. Glenbard North has one of the state's top two-way players in RB/DB Justin Jackson. The Panthers also have a formidable play-action passing game, led by QB Brian Murphy.

On the defensive

Wheaton North put together its best defensive game of the season in last week's 45-0 shutout of Naperville Central. Keep an eye on Wheaton North defensive end Kellen Cleveland. What Glenbard North lacks in size it makes up for in playing fast and physical. LBs Mario Rodriguez (and Alex Smith are worth watching.
