A Windber-area man and longtime Paint Township police officer died Thursday evening from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident while off duty more than a week ago.
William S. Gephart died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the palliative care unit at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, with family at his bedside. He was 43 years old.
Gephart was critically injured April 13 after crashing his ATV into a tree in rural Bedford County. He was riding with his son near the family's New Paris Cottage.
Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said Gephart died from a head injury. The veteran officer was not wearing a helmet when he was ejected from his Honda ATV after the vehicle sideswiped a tree near Rocklick Hollow Road, Napier Township, state police in Bedford said.
Gephart's young son was riding with him that night and also was thrown from the ATV. The child was wearing a helmet, and was treated and released from Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.
Paint Township Police Chief Rick Skiles said he was unable to comment Thursday night. Skiles said he planned to meet with the family today regarding arrangements.
"My thoughts and prayers are with his family," Skiles said.
Somerset County 911 informed emergency services personnel over the airways Thursday evening of the officer's death.
Gephart was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries that night, police said.
