NORTHERN CAMBRIA — The Somerset swimmers swept Northern Cambria Wednesday.
The Lady Eagles brought in a 108-62 win while the Eagles won 103-56. The ladies are now 4-0 while the boys are 3-1.
"We had a lot of good swims and we continue to work well together as a team," said Somerset head coach Lauren Knupp.
The Lady Eagles were led by team captain Mary Mack who was a quadruple winner. Mack collected in individual wins in the 200 freestyle (2:55.51) and the 100 butterfly (1:14.80). She was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:58.20) joined by teammates Anna Chan, Danielle Owen and Elexsis Robison. Mack was also a member of the first place 400 freestyle relay (4:34.50) joined by teammates captain Emily Schleich, Chan and Owen. Schleich and Chan were both triple winners. Schleich brought in firsts in the 200 IM (2:37.15) and the 100 backstroke (1:14.29). Chan took first in the 100 freestyle (1:04.48). Kelsey Knupp and Robison were double winners. Knupp won the 500 freestyle (7:06.75). Robison took first in the 50 freestyle (28.71). The Lady Eagles swept three events and went 1-2 in one event. In the 200 freestyle, Mack was followed by Knupp (2:41.49) and Sarah Reeping (2:51.78) bringing in third. In the 50 freestyle, Robison was followed by Chan (28.93) and Owen (29.52) bringing in third. In the 500 freestyle, Knupp was followed by third-place finishers Lauren Marple (7:07.90) and Owen (7:09.26). The ladies went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle (1:06.77) with Robison bringing in a second place finish.
The boys were led by quadruple winners captain Nick Bastian, Christian Gehman and Josh Stoppe. Bastian brought in two individual wins in the 200 freestyle (2:14.54) and the 100 freestyle (57.24). Gehman won the 200 IM (2:38.20) and the 500 freestyle (6:30.25). Stoppe captured wins in the 50 freestyle (25.00) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.51). All three men were members of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:43.49) joined by teammate Brandon Williams. They were also members of the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:11.27) joined by teammate Shane Ickes. Ickes was a double winner for the boys bringing in first in the 100 backstroke (1:19.36). Captain Brenden Knecht brought in another individual win for the men in the 100 butterfly (1:14.36). The boys swept one event and went 1-2 in four events. In the 100 freestyle, Bastian was followed by Ickes (59.79) and Williams (1:02.55) bringing in third. In the 200 freestyle, Bastian was followed by Jim deVries (2:39.90). In the 200 IM, Gehman was followed by Nick Kimmel (2:55.20). In the 100 butterfly, Knecht was followed by deVries (1:25.97). In the 400 freestyle relay (4:56.65), the team of Andy Bastian, Williams, Kimmel and Knecht claimed runners-up honors.
