Jack and Janice Dickey of Stoystown celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Jack and the former Janice Walker were married March 22, 1953, in the Berlin Lutheran Church by the Rev. John Heller and the Rev. H. Dale Zimmerman.
Born Janice Fay Walker on June 25, 1953, she is the daughter of the late W. Jay Walker and Mary Hay Walker. Jack was born on March 29, l930 in Berlin, to the late John Dickey and Hazel Holland Dickey.
Jack and Janice have resided in Stoystown for 52 years and are active members of the Stoystown United Church of Christ.
Janice is the treasurer of the Women's Guild. She tap dances and enjoys working out at the gym. She is a graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School and Grove City College. She owned and operated a dress shop in Stoystown for 10 years. She retired in 1982.
Jack is a graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He did his undergraduate work at Juniata College and played basketball and baseball at Juniata. Jack earned a masters degree and a secondary principal's certificate at West Virginia University. He is a Mason, member of the American Legion and Somerset County Oldtimers.
Jack is a retired teacher and administrator of the former Forbes, now North Star School District, having served 38 years. He retired in 1990. He coached basketball and baseball for 17 years and had many talented players, five of whom signed professional baseball contracts, with one getting a full time basketball scholarship. Jack had the rare opportunity to play baseball while in the service during the Korean War, and caught two pitchers who would later become Cy Young award winners. He was honored in 2000 to be inducted into the Somerset County Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jack just completed 40 years as a Somerset County sportscaster for high school sports.
They are parents of Cathy Dickey, Stoystown, Jill Miller and husband Steve, Somerset, and John Dickey, New York City. They have three grandchildren.
They are planning a Las Vegas family vacation in June to celebrate.
