The Mariners' Museum in Newport News is hosting New York Times best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin to speak about his new book, "When America First Met China: An Exotic History of Tea, Drugs, and Money in the Age of Sail." Dolin's other books include "Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America" (another best-seller), and "Fur, Fortune, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America."

According to the press release I received, this latest release "is a fascinating look at the origins of this long and complicated trade relationship (and helps illuminate today's China and the current economic, political, and cultural relationships between the two countries). It's also a story filled with lots of rather interesting characters."

A light reception and book-signing will follow the presentation.
