  1. Beauty metals: The 24-karat spin

The holidays are the season of sparkle. And that goes for beauty treatments as well as for Christmas trees. Spas and beauty companies are capitalizing on the allure of jewels and precious metals, hoping to harness radiance and a feeling of indulgence by adding gold, gemstones or diamonds to their products.

Having pink hair à la Audrey Kitching isn't easy.
Having pink hair à la Audrey Kitching isn't easy. "It is high maintenance, make no mistake," says Kitching, an Aveda-trained hairstylist before she became an Internet celebrity. "To get that bubblegum candy floss pink, first you have to go whitest...

  7. Catalina calls from across the water

Ferrying to Santa Catalina Island — just you, that special someone and an upper deck brimming with buoyant kids, chiding parents and assorted Jimmy Buffett look-alikes — isn't exactly a secret on any summer Friday. L.A.'s fabled leisure isle hosts more than 1 million visitors each year, and by the looks of those lines at the waffle-cone place, the throngs at the Green Pleasure Pier and the buzzing golf carts in downtown Avalon, many of them are hitting it right now. Should that deter you? Nah — it's all fun. But it might inspire a little solitude strategizing without resorting to hiding out in Two Harbors or (more drastic) hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail. When I'm traveling to Avalon, here are some of my favorite escape hatches beside, above and beyond the bay.

  11. More men coloring their hair

For most men, it's about staying competitive in a youth-focused workplace. For others, it's a need to keep up with new young wives. And for some, well, they just like the sleek black tops on those "Jersey Shore" boys.

  15. HAIR CARE: Posh Salon

I have been a hair designer since 1969. Early in my career I was fortunate enough to work for Redken Laboratories and receive advanced training in the chemistry of hair and hair coloring. I worked for Redken for several years training young hair designers in the scientific art of hair coloring on a national level. I have opened several salons on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, in New Orleans, San Antonio, and Colorado Springs. I trained under many master hair designers including Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, and Xenon. I have been certified in Redken, Fermisi, Logics, Goldwell, and Schwartzkopf hair coloring systems. I have mentored many young hairdressers over the past 15 years to pursue their careers in cosmetology. I had the pleasure of working at the Broadmoor World Resort in Colorado Springs for five years. I now own Posh Salon in Williamsburg. We have a wonderful team of stylists and I am confident that we can handle any hair challenge that walks through our doors. We use only AVEDA hair care and hair color because it is plant derived, eco-friendly, better for your hair and scalp, and overall gives the most beautiful and vibrant results of any coloring system I have ever worked with.
