A businessman who amassed his fortune running themed-restaurants and trading in currencies, Joe Lewis owns Windermere-based Tavistock Group, which is developing Lake Nona. A British expatriate, Lewis has lived in the Bahamas since 1979. He also has a home in Isleworth. He is a self-made billionaire who was listed as the world's 369th-richest person in Forbes magazine's 2007 survey. He reportedly has a fortune of $2.5 billion. Lewis is known as a contrarian investor, or one who buys companies or shares of companies when they are out of favor. He purchased the Central Florida developments of both Isleworth and Lake Nona when they were on the verge of financial collapse and turned them into two of the area's upscale residential jewels. An Orlando Sentinel analysis of Lewis' holdings in 2006 found at least 40 properties and companies in many states and countries. Most of the companies were small, obscure, bought out of bankruptcy or distressed. Lewis was born in London in 1937, and left school when he was 15 to work in his father's business, learning the restaurant trade. He worked 14-hour days in the kitchen and as a waiter, taking on more responsibility and expanding the business in the 1960s. Lewis built a collection of "themed" entertainment clubs in London, with elaborate props and costumed staff. Those clubs have been described as the forerunner of the modern theme-restaurant industry in the United States.
