1. Gates reopen for Lake Hollywood strolls

High in the hills, perched between Hollywood and Vine and the Hollywood sign, sits scenic Lake Hollywood, a reservoir held back by a dam designed by the great water wrangler William Mulholland. Flanked by a classic California mix of oak, pine, eucalyptus, agave and sage, and circled by a pedestrian trail reopened in April after being off-limits for seven years, this is one of the city's great mountain walking spots, and it's less than 10 minutes from the 101 Freeway.

  13. The Millennium project: Reaching high in Hollywood

For far too long, development in Los Angeles has been approved based not on community plans and zoning codes but on a somewhat chaotic form of negotiation in which developers cajole, strong-arm or, um, financially incentivize city politicians into making concessions and giving breaks. It's time for that to stop. There is a reason why carefully thought out and democratically adopted zoning codes and strategic growth plans should be adhered to — especially in a city decried for its mash-up of buildings.

  15. L.A. architecture takes the lead in Getty's new PST project

Much of the time Los Angeles can feel like a huge, messy jigsaw puzzle, with pieces left out — a city that evolved by accident. Parts of it don't work, parts of it seem newly broken, parts are truly luminous — but hidden — and they all seem to have nothing to do with each other.
