  1. Destination America aims to bring us together, with bacon

Tony's I-75 Restaurant in Birch Run, Mich., is proud home of what might well be the nation's largest BLT. Each sandwich contains a pound of bacon — about 25 to 30 deep-fried strips — stacked about 8 inches high between two slabs of white bread. On a recent visit there, Todd Fisher, host of the new series "United States of Food," was invited to sample one. "I'm not gonna lie, I was scared," he says. "I took two bites and was like, OK, I'm good."

  13. Fashion a great fit for reality TV

In December 2004, TV viewers started to tune in to a reality show that documented the dramatic details of producing a runway collection, and with it came a familiarity with infectious little catchphrases such as "make it work, people" and "<i>auf Wiedersehen</i>." "Project Runway" lifted a curtain on the fashion industry, bringing usually behind-the-scenes individuals &#8212; magazine editors, stylists and designers &#8212; to millions of homes. It offered competition, drama, lively characters and eye candy in the form of sometimes gorgeous clothes as well as the models who wear them.
