1. 12 places to visit in 2012

New Mexico: This year, New Mexicans mark 100 years of statehood. But much of the state's appeal stems from its human history that goes back much further. (In 2010, Santa Fe celebrated 400 years of cityhood.) Explore here: the adobe architecture and art galleries of Santa Fe; the vintage signage along old Route 66; the lingering hippie vibe of Truth or Consequences. Don't forget the Lightning Field, an art installation outside Quemado where (for $150 to $250 a person) you spend a summer night in a wood cabin and wait to see if lightning will strike one of the 400 tall steel poles outside your door. Even if there's no strike, the sky puts on shows at sunset and sunrise that will leave you in awe.

  3. Civil War deeply rooted in Virginia

On a blustery late-winter afternoon at Manassas, where a muscular statue of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson marks the spot where the Confederate general earned his nickname, the Civil War lives, not separate from life in Virginia, but intricately entwined with it.

  7. Battlefield Virginia

    Hartford Courant Staff Writer

  21. Richmond, Virginia

Go here: You can't visit Richmond without confronting the Civil War. The city is so rich in Civil War history that you can't miss it, even if you're not a Civil War buff. In fact, a weekend visitor invariably confronts one of two pickles: If you aren't particularly interested in the War Between the States, you'll feel guilty bypassing what is just about Civil War Central. And if you are a war buff eager to immerse yourself in the subject, you won't have enough time to do it justice. At the Museum and White House of the Confederacy, as you might expect, the focus is on the Southern side of things during the Civil War. The museum houses the world's largest collection of Confederate artifacts and flags. Extending from the visitor center is the Riverfront Canal Walk, an appealing place for a stroll through history.
