Broward Community College is a two-year college with nine locations throughout Broward County. It serves about 55,000 students a year. The president is J. David Armstrong, Jr. who came in July 2007 after serving as chancellor of the Florida State Community College System. BCC offers two-year associate's degrees in arts, science, applied science, as well as technical certificates. Some students transfer to a four-year university, while others go directly to the workforce. BCC admits anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent for its degree programs. If they fail an entrance exam in math, reading or English, they must take non-credit remedial classes. Most students entering BCC need at least one remedial class. Broward Community College's trustees agreed in May to create four-year bachelor's degrees to allow its graduates to teach special education, math and science. BCC hopes to begin admitting its first bachelor's students in fall 2008. BCC opened in 1960 as Junior College of Broward County in the former Naval Air Station Junior High buildings on the western edge of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to a history compiled by BCC officials. The school then had 28 faculty and 70 students. Broward Community College has three campuses and a variety of educational centers located throughout Broward County. The A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, the college's first permanent campus, is a 152-acre campus in Davie. It is part of an educational complex that also includes Nova Southeastern University and the Davie branch of Florida Atlantic University, among other institutions. The Judson A. Samuels South Campus is on a 103-acre tract in Pembroke Pines, just west of the Florida Turnpike. The North Campus in Coconut Creek covers approximately 113 acres adjacent to the Florida Turnpike. Administrative offices are at the Willis Holcombe Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale., which also includes some classroom space. There are also smaller locations in Weston, Miramar and Dania Beach.  « Show less
