  3. Mayberry's role in 'Good People' hits close to home

Sometimes it takes a particular role to allow you to see an actor you've watched for years in a way you've never seen her before. Sometimes it takes a character who taps into something particularly close to the actor's own life experience. For Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Mariann Mayberry, Margaret, the proud but struggling Boston Southie in David Lindsay-Abaire's "Good People," is most assuredly that moment. And for Mayberry, who has been acting in Chicago and New York for more than 20 years, this chance has not come early in her career.

  15. In James Harms, a Chicago actor who sets himself apart

When director Frank Galati premiered "The Visit," a new musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, at the Goodman Theatre in 2001, the legendary Chita Rivera soaked up most of the attention (although, given the timing of the production that terrible, post-Sept. 11 fall, even Rivera did not get enough notice for the show to enjoy its just deserts). But there was a gaunt, dignified, silver-headed man always at her side, a creepy figure who stalked this macabre show like a man from another time and place, at once subservient and deeply menacing.
