1. Sending your kid away to college

College-bound teen Shannon Murray — by her mother’s estimation — is “bubbly, trusting, outgoing and befriends absolutely everyone.” As the San Diego high schooler prepared to head off for her freshman year at Arizona State University, her mom, Ann, sat her down for a heart-to-heart.

  3. On a pilgrimage to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest

The White Mountains that straddle the California-Nevada border are known for their extreme environment. They get less than a foot of rain a year. The wind blows almost constantly, and the temperatures can dip to well below zero.

  5. Guns and alcohol: Gun owners drink more and take more risks, study says

Gun owners: Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger. 7. Caffeine's buzz chases away women's depression

Compared with uncaffeinated women, those who drank the equivalent of four or more cups of coffee a day are more likely to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes and less likely to volunteer their time in church or community groups. But a new study finds that well-caffeinated women have a key health advantage over their more abstemious sisters: they’re less likely to become depressed.

  9. Market Watch: Farm brings every muscat imaginable

One of the rarest but greatest pleasures of farmers markets is encountering passionate collectors who sell a wide range of rare fruit varieties normally grown only at specialty sites such as germplasm repositories and agricultural experiment stations. There's no better example than Patrice Dreckmann of Rainbow Heights Farm & Nursery, who grows 50 varieties of muscat grapes and 43 varieties of figs just south of Temecula.
