Robin Benway has something to say to aspiring writers. The author of the young adult novels "Also Known As," "Audrey, Wait?" and "The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May and June" recently spoke to students in the MFA program at UC Riverside's Palm Desert program. She was asked what advice she'd give to the hopeful writers there, but didn't manage to say everything she would have liked.

  5. Decentralize the UC system? It's a bad idea [Blowback]

In arguing that the individual campuses of the University of California would be better served by having a looser relationship with a drastically downsized UC office of the president, UCLA history professor David Myers relies in part on the late Clark Kerr to make his case. In a May 31 Times Op-Ed article, Myers cites the former UC president's observation that the "university-wide system has no alumni, no students, no faculty, no sports teams, no one to cheer for it."

  11. Ruben Barrales, party guy

When President Obama told students in Mexico that without the support of U.S. Latinos he would not be president, he wasn't talking about the GOP's Ruben Barrales. But Barrales gets the message. He is the son of immigrants, and San Mateo County's first Latino supervisor. Mexico gave him its Ohtli medal, for his work on behalf of Mexican Americans. Once a Democrat, he went to work in the George W. Bush White House and ran San Diego's regional chamber of commerce. His principal task now, as head of GROW Elect, is cultivating Latino Republican elected officials in California, not exactly fertile soil for the GOP of late. He has his ideas why, and what to do about it.
