Maybe Boyle County couldn’t have taken out the best golf team in its region just yet, but Alex Jarman knows they can do better than their results Tuesday would indicate.
The Boyle boys coach tried to make that point clear both in a brief team meeting following the Rebels’ loss to West Jessamine at Danville Country Club and by calling a previously unscheduled practice for tonight.
Boyle’s four-man score of 164 was 16 strokes behind West Jessamine, the two-time defending 5th Region champion, and well behind where the Rebels have been in most of their recent matches.
“We were improving. We’ve been shooting 150, 151, and last week we cut that down a little bit, but then today we just threw it all out the window,” Jarman said.
Boyle had only one score below 40, while three West Jessamine players shot par or better, led by Fred Allen Meyer and Conner Haas at 1-under 35.
“They are the best team in the region, but we’re a good team, and we can play with anybody. We’ve just got to go out there and do it,” said Dakota Jarman, who led Boyle with a 39.
Alex Jarman said the Rebels will get right back to work on making sure this match becomes the exception rather than the rule.
“We’re going to start over again tomorrow. We usually don’t practice on Wednesday, but we’re going to practice tomorrow,” he said. “We’ll see how we measure up Saturday. We’re going to a pretty good tournament up in Lexington. The top teams will be up there.”
That tournament is George Rogers Clark’s invitational at Kearney Hill. It will be the fourth tournament of the season for Boyle, which finished fourth last weekend in Garrard County’s tourney at Dix River.
Dakota Jarman said he looks forward to playing against good competition such as the teams in that field and the team Boyle played Tuesday.
“You always want to play against the best. It always brings out the best in you and shows your true character,” he said.
This match may not have brought the best in Boyle, but Alex Jarman said he’s confident the Rebels will bounce back.
“I think we will, when they get their heads screwed on right,” he said.
