After the coffee. Before burning off all the food I ate last week. The Skinny: I spent the weekend with family in Washington, D.C., and can report that traffic in the nation's capital is worse than it is here. And I didn't even get on the Beltway much....

  3. Oscar 8-Ball: Tom Hooper's 'Les Miserables'

Tom Hooper's adaptation of the tip-top pop opera "Les Miserables" has already racked top nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes voters. How will the academy respond? Time to check in with the Oscar 8-Ball, that magical portal into the minds and hearts and, in the rare applicable instance, the souls of academy members and how they'll be voting this awards season.

  5. The sound of blurred borders in 'Life of Pi'

Composer Mychael Danna was in the middle of scoring the first pivotal scene of Ang Lee's "Life of Pi." The 11-or-so minutes being put to music that early September day were creating quite the challenge for Danna and Lee, who were watching the film, sans digital effects, in a control room adjacent to an 80-plus-member orchestra.

  7. DGA nominations: These voters did see 'Les Miz,' right?

With the Directors Guild handing a nomination to Tom Hooper for his work on "Les Miserables," a movie many have cited for its ... well ... let's be charitable (for the moment) and use the word "odd" with regard to its craftsmanship, we can now be certain of one thing. Support for the overwrought musical that everyone loves to sing-along to is strong. Strong enough, certainly, for that expected best picture Oscar nomination on Thursday and probably solid enough to put Hooper among the five Oscar nominees for director.

  11. Cinematographers cross into new visual territories

With nine Oscar nominations and more than 60 movies under his belt, Roger Deakins thought he had seen it all. But even the 63-year-old cinematographer, who directed this year's James Bond blockbuster, "Skyfall," was surprised when he learned of a new system that could be used for his film.
