1. Travel letters: The right to roam in England and Wales

The right to roam in Wales I was pleased to see John Flinn's excellent piece on walking the Offa's Dyke Path with Bill Bryson ["Strolling Over Hill and Dale in Wales," April 1], particularly the picture of one-eyed Llewelyn Morgan, who I have known for...

3. Smaller legs of world cruises can be a deal

The British couple — she in a long black dress, he in a traditional tux — leaned against the elevator's polished wood paneling as they headed back to their cabin after an evening performance in the main showroom. Embarrassed at my casual clothes and running shoes, I stammered, "We decided not to dress up and went to the buffet instead of the main dining room."

5. What's on these authors' summer 2011 reading list

Here at Book Review, we know what looked good to us on the summer bookshelves, but we couldn't help but wonder what some of our favorite authors were looking forward to tossing in their travel bag or bringing out to the backyard or the beach for one of those long, sunny afternoons. For many, the coming months seem to be a chance to catch up on those beguiling titles we somehow don't have time for the rest of the year but are oh-so made for summer.

13. The best of Word Play in 2009

My pick as best picture book of the year, "All the World" (Beach Lane/Simon & Schuster: $17.99, ages 3-7), could easily replace the traditional holiday greeting card as a perfect expression of peace and goodwill. Liz Garton Scanlon's lilting rhymes about a family's activities in a single day, combined with Marla Frazee's by turns intimate and expansive paintings, convey a sense of contentment, simplicity and completeness.

21. Santa Barbara, once upon a fine time

Times Staff Writer
The flat-panel TV, the DVD player, the hand-painted bathroom tiles — the details were meant to impress. But when I entered Room 215 in the new Hotel Andalucía, my eyes scanned for something else. Sure enough, beside the billowy bed turned down...

23. Santa Barbara is known for luxury, but it can be done cheaply with some advance planning

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — If you believe the glossy travel magazines, Santa Barbara drips money, and any visitor had better be ready to have their wallet leak all over the place, too. Touted as "the American Riviera," it's up there with Palm Beach, the Hamptons and Martha's Vineyard as playgrounds for that top 1 percent that the Occupy Wall Street protesters are talking about.
