3. Chris Weitz Takes An Indie Turn; Plus Mockumentary Hijinks and a Pooh Reboot

It's not such a stretch that Chris Weitz, who with his brother Paul made millions with American Pie and most recently has been helming effects-laden fantasies like The Golden Compass and Twilight: New Moon, would direct a low-budget movie about Mexican immigrants in East L.A. His grandmother, Lupita Tovar, was a Mexican movie star (his mother, Susan Kohner, played the daughter passing for white in Imitation of Life) and she's still kicking at 100. For her, perhaps, is A Better Life, a well-observed, quietly moving drama about an illegal immigrant and single father (Demián Bichir) trying to make a better life for his ungrateful and indifferent teenage son (José Julián), who had the good fortune to have been born in America.

5. 'Curb' comic's stand-up blends sweetness and acid

COMEDY REVIEW: Jeff Garlin's "No Sugar Tonight" at Steppenwolf Theatre ★★★
Only Jeff Garlin could get away with doing an entire show about his giving up sweet stuff, even titling the show "No Sugar Tonight," while swigging from a bottle of Gatorade.
Only Jeff Garlin could get away with doing an entire show about his giving up sweet stuff — even titling the show "No Sugar Tonight" — while swigging from a bottle of Gatorade. The thematic disconnect was particularly egregious because, by...

7. Movie Review: Winnie the Pooh

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
“Winnie the Pooh,” Disney’s latest film revival of A.A. Milne’s “willy, nilly, silly old bear,” is longer on charm than it is on laughs. Or length. But it’s a treat for children making their first trek to the...

17. “Gulliver’s Travels” — Jack Black, Jason, Emily, Billy…the new trailer

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
This trailer to the holiday movie tells a lot more of the story (How Gulliver-J.Black, ends up in his Lilliput) and shows us more of the little people in the supporting cast. Emily Blunt, Jason Segan, Billy Connolly. Cute enough, I suppose, but not...

19. BEST OF 2010: 'A Streetcar Named Desire' leads a year of strong productions

The Theater Loop
“A Streetcar Named Desire” was director David Cromer’s poetic, primal production at Writers’ Theatre in Glencoe, and No. 1 on my list of best shows of 2010. With best-of-the-year lists, it’s customary to wail about the difficulty of ranking so.....

21. Movie Review: Gulliver’s Travels

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
It begins with a very short cartoon starring that pre-historic “Ice Age” squirrel and ends with a big song and dance number. But no, “Gulliver's Travels” isn't all filler. Even though it sometimes seems that way. This Jack Black...
