1. J.J. Abrams shoots down directing Star Wars: Episode VII

Just who will direct "Star Wars: Episode VII"? For now, we have more names against the project than we have for it. Everyone from Steven Spielberg to Quentin Tarantino to Guillermo del Toro has denied interest in directing the newest "Star Wars" film,...

3. Tim Burton reanimates his past in 'Frankenweenie'

When Tim Burton was an eager young animator and filmmaker working at Disney Studios in the early 1980s, he made an inventive live-action short film inspired by his childhood in Burbank and the love of a family dog. That 1984 short, “Frankenweenie,” which starred Shelley Duvall and Daniel Stern, has now been turned into a 3-D stop-motion animated feature.

5. Andy Klein's top 10 films of 2011

There are numerous inherent flaws and absurdities in the process of compiling Top 10s and Best ofs; nonetheless, here are my favorite films released in Los Angeles in the calendar year 2011. In my version of this imperfect exercise, “favorite” is almost (but not exactly) congruent with “best.”

7. Film review: Brad Bird adds wit to 'Mission: Impossible'

“Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” gallops into theaters almost exactly on schedule — its predecessors came out in 1996, 2000 and 2006 — and (more importantly) just in time to rescue Tom Cruise's flagging box-office numbers. Outside of his funny, if bizarre, guest spot in “Tropic Thunder,” his films since the last entry (“Lions for Lambs,” “Valkyrie” and the underrated “Knight and Day”) have all underperformed. The utterly enjoyable “M:I — GP” should fix all that.

13. 'John Carter' review: A slightly better mix of cowboys and aliens than "Cowboys and Aliens"

**1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) Like that other long-haired, bare-chested hero with the initials J.C., John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) arrives just in time to calm heated alien tempers and save Mars from laser-powered destruction. OK, maybe the biblical allegory only...

17. Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol

It’s strange that director Brad Bird won Oscars for animated films The Incredibles and Ratatouille, (and was involved with Iron Giant as well as some animated TV shows), and he directed this action picture. It’s the fourth in the franchise, and it sometimes feels like a cartoon.
