1. 'Unaccompanied Minors'

A layover disguised as a film, "Unaccompanied Minors" tells a John Hughes-ian tale of six kids stranded at an airport over the holidays. It comes from a story (a sharp nine-minute number called "Babysitting," by Susan Burton) originally broadcast on the Ira Glass-hosted radio series "This American Life." With that pedigree you think: Promising. Unconventional. Yet the screenplay apparently went through some sort of airport security scanner that sucked out all the quirks.

5. 'Bad Santa'

"Bad Santa" is a Christmas movie that Lenny Bruce could love. A comedy about a full-time cynic who works as a part-time department store Santa, this is a superb stink bomb of an entertainment, generously larded with jokes about alcoholics, short people, dim children and the kind of sexual congress that until recently was illegal in nine states. If the film were sent out as a screener, I wouldn't ship it off to the relatives — I would fire it up again on Dec. 25 and bask in the glow of its obdurate Grinchitude.

7. Movie review: 'Bad Santa'

Chicago Tribune Movie Writer
3 1/2 stars (out of 4) You may never hear as much swearing around kids as in "Bad Santa." There are some lessons here: 1. Don't take kids to "Bad Santa." 2. Don't see "Bad Santa" if you're offended by swearing around kids. But for those who can...
