1. Unexpected affinities

Careers have arcs. Writers develop and change, as evidenced by "I Explain a Few Things: Selected Poems" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux: 360 pp., $16), a new bilingual anthology of the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" (Vintage: 384 pp., $14.95), a collection of 24 stories spanning more than two decades by Haruki Murakami. Neruda died in 1973 at 69, while Murakami, approaching 60, is happily very much still with us.

  3. 'Hancock's' Jason Bateman enjoys the Hollywood climb

NESTLED IN the hills to the west of the Hollywood sign, Runyon Canyon is a see-and-be-seen hiking circuit, heavy on the unleashed dogs. As a workout, it's a dust-bowl journey of around 45 minutes, during which one sometimes passes -- amid the halter-topped women running fiercely and the Sherpa types strolling with several dogs -- an actor of some repute.

  7. The high life without airs

"I never thought I'd be one of those women who had a relationship with her interior designer," Gigi Levangie Grazer says. She is standing in the kitchen of her Pacific Palisades home, surrounded by honed limestone counters and cabinets painted the color of fresh hollandaise. The shade of paint, brushed nickel drawer pulls and a weathered farmhouse table in the adjacent family room were all chosen by Michael Smith, the interior designer who has become such an adored buddy that Gigi sometimes refers to him as "my next husband." Her current husband, Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer, he of the spiked hair and $11.2 billion in gross revenue, would undoubtedly understand her comment as a compliment, in Gigispeak, not a plan.
