1. Penn State, front and center, on "Face The Nation"

Groller's Corner
The Penn State conversation never ends. It's the type of story that sells because it involves the fall of power and an icon and because no one, and I mean absolutely no one, saw the depths of this story coming a year or 10 months ago. So there's the added...

5. Lit Fest holds on to that printed feeling

As obvious as this may sound at first, the 28th annual Chicago Tribune Printers Row Lit Fest, which concluded Sunday afternoon and drew an estimated 130,000 attendees and 200 authors to the South Loop on a sweltering, cloudless weekend, was not the kind of thing you could call up on a Kindle.

7. Who's No. 1 — in high school?

We live in a culture that demands all things be rated and ranked, especially our sports teams. At the end of the season, somebody has to earn the right to raise one of those garish foam fingers and shout, "We're Number One." That seems to count for a lot.

A few final thoughts as we approach the 6:18 post time for the 137th running of the Preakness: It comes down to this: Either Bodemeister can run the same race he did two weeks ago, or he can’t. If he can, he likely won’t be beat. Kentucky...

I love college football. It's by far my favorite sport to watch and to obsess over. But I must say that my former colleague Buzz Bissinger has a good point in this essay: Football only provides the thickest layer of......

I am a fan of Ira Glass and "This American Life." In fact, I am such a fan, I have been sitting here for four days hoping someone else would write this piece. But no one is apparently. So, here goes. Let me preface it by saying maybe I am so out of...

23. LIONEL: More Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Would Be An Insane Response to Penn State Scandal

[Ed.] As was to be expected a host of instant child abuse experts are mindlessly clamoring for more mandatory child abuse reporting that they think would be just a swell idea in response to the Penn State child abuse scandal. The National Coalition of Child Protection reform (NCCPR) doesn't seem to agree. This disquisition is a must read as a counter to the knee-jerk "there must be more laws" crowd. I wholeheartedly agree. As an ex-prosecutor, my tenure in juvenile court taught me that the last thing these poor kids need is some interloper do-gooder meddling.
