1. Women can kick comic butt too

Every April since 2010, something awesome has happened in Chicago: McCormick Place has transformed into a realm of fantasy, superheroes and hella cool costumes known as C2E2 (that's Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, for the unaware).

  3. Between the Darkness and the Light: Brian Azzarello on writing for DC Comics

If you only went by the type of comic-books he wrote, you would think that Brian Azzarello was a brooding soul, a tortured artist who was tormented by a traumatic past. But when you speak with the writer of dark titles like “100 Bullets” and “Hellblazer”, he sure doesn’t come across that way. Ask him about the challenges of writing characters like The Watchmen’s Rorshach or Wonder Woman, and Azzarello is thoughtful and easy to crack wise. It’s not until you bring up the topic of his favorite baseball team - the Chicago Cubs - that the conversation gets gloomy. Well…not really.

  5. It's a nerd world

Once a month, at Third Coast Comics in the Edgewater neighborhood, the store closes for the evening and the knitting comes out. Followed by the drinks. Drink & Draw & Knitting Night is the second Thursday of each month, as it has been since Terry Gant opened Third Coast nearly five years ago. When I asked who actually comes to this, he replied: “Nerds, artists, fiber-arts folks, nerds — by and large, super-nerdy people show up for knitting nights at comic book shops.”

  9. Group celebrates LGBT geekiness

Kicking down the geek closet door can be as liberating as the coming-out process for some LGBTs—a transformation as powerful as Clark Kent shedding his suit and spectacles for the iconic blue tights and red cape of his alter ego, Superman.

  11. Printers Row exclusive: 2013 C2E2 poster revealed

Superman flies across the Chicago skyline in this year's Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo poster. The artist is Tony Daniel, a Chicagoan. "I really wanted to showcase that famous skyline as much as the hero, " said Daniel, who recently joined the creative team behind "Action Comics," the comic book that introduced the Man of Steel in 1938. C2E2 is scheduled for April 26-28 in McCormick Place. An estimated 40,000 people attended last year's conference.
