  1. 'Epic' doesn't quite live up to its title

    McClatchy-Tribune News Service
Derivative as all get out and plainly concocted by a committee, "Epic" is a children's animated film that is more entertaining and emotional than it has any right to be. Characters make sacrifices and die, miss their parents and mourn. And we're touched....

  3. An 'Epic' journey for Amanda Seyfried

"Epic," which features the voice of Allentown's Amanda Seyfried, began its journey to the big screen courtesy of director Chris Wedge, the filmmaker who directed "Ice Age" and co-founded Blue Sky animation. A few years ago, Wedge and author William Joyce...

  5. Review: 'Epic'

    Variety
The most questionable thing about "Epic," Blue Sky Studios' latest animated adventure, is its title. Not only is it generic-sounding and Google-unfriendly, it's also one of the last words most viewers would use to describe the film. Which is not to say...

  7. Review: 'The Sapphires'

    Tulsa World
Every so often, a film like "The Sapphires" comes along, and I'm glad it does. This sweet charmer put a smile on my face at the start, and it just stayed there. The movie has more soul than it does substance. It's sentimental but not sticky-sweet. The...

  11. DVD reviews: 'Cloud Atlas' and 'Texas Chainsaw'

    The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"Cloud Atlas" (2012, R, 172 min., $28.98). One of the most anticipated movies of the 2012 slate, "Cloud Atlas" didn't quite perform up to expectations. The picture is hard to grasp, with a confusing collection of interwoven storylines that produce lots of...

  13. Genealogical absurdity in Christopher Guest's 'Family Tree'

    The Philadelphia Inquirer
You have to give Christopher Guest credit: When he finds a comedy style that works for him, he sticks with it. Since This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, he has devoted himself to deadpan mockumentaries like Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman, using a loyal...

  15. Review: HBO's 'Family Tree' rooted in warm, goofy eccentricity

Christopher Guest, the director of "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind," has made a TV series for HBO.
Christopher Guest, the director of "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind," has made a TV series for HBO. The eight-episode "Family Tree," which premieres Sunday, is his first work in seven years, and like his films it is sweet and funny and not a little...

    Channel Guide Magazine
Family Tree Sundays beginning May 12 HBO, 10:30pm ET The Christopher Guest troupe of actors from films like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and For Your Consideration seem like a little family all their own. So it’s only appropriate that they...

  19. Ellen Gray: 'Family Tree' comes to HBO

    Philadelphia Daily News
Ancestor worship's all the rage these days. So HBO's newest comedy, "Family Tree," about a man tracing his roots, should have built-in appeal for those not already sold by the name of co-creator Christopher Guest ("Best in Show," "Waiting for Guffman")....

  21. TV Picks: 'Family Tree,' 'Nashville,' '10 Buildings,' 'The Middle'

<strong>"Family Tree" (HBO, premieres Sunday).</strong> Christopher Guest has made you a TV series. Thank him. The director of "A Mighty Wind" and "Best in Show" and one of the forces behind and in "This Is Spinal Tap" -- in which he was Nigel Tufnel, whose amplifier went to 11 and whose guitar you were not to touch or even to look at -- Guest has been an architect of modern comedy, from the improvised dialogue that marks his films to the documentary style in which most have been shot. Its sound is his sound, its look his look. (Ricky Gervais owes him his career, if we are to consider that career based on "The Office"; "Parks &amp; Recreation" could almost be Guest's own work.) In the wonderful "Family Tree," hangdog Chris O'Dowd ("Bridesmaids," "The IT Crowd"), finding his life stalled after losing a girlfriend and a job in short order, goes in search of his roots and relatives. It's a trip that takes him into the theater, a boxing club, England's rural north, the back end of pantomime horse and finally to America. Michael McKean, a regular member of Guest's repertory company, plays Tom's father; Nina Conti his troubled ventriloquist sister. Jim Piddock, another Guest player, co-wrote the series and also appears in it, as Tom's antique-dealing downstairs neighbor. Familiar faces Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr. and Amy Seimetz will also arrive in due time.

  23. McNamara's Picks: 'Scandal,' 'Family Tree,' 'Elementary'

"Scandal": Shonda Rhimes' whacked-out buzzfest of a political drama comes to a much-fanticipated close after its first full season (it debuted as a mid-season replacement.) As super-sleuth and super-stylin' D.C. power-fixer Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) continues her on-again/off-again (currently very much on) affair with the perpetually lovesick President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) -- your tax dollars at work! -- she and her fellow gladiators are also desperate to reveal the traitor passing state secrets out of the White House directly to terrorists. And the right one this time, please--when they previously, and wrongly, accused the CIA director, he wound up dead.
