3. Movie review: 'Leonie' biopic upstaged by woman's famous son

In the biopic "Leonie," the famous artists in a Japanese American family — the sculptor-architect Isamu Noguchi and his writer father — are supporting characters. The "woman behind the men," Leonie Gilmour, steps out front and center. She's ferociously independent and unconventional, and played with a bright, chilly strength by Emily Mortimer. But one of the disappointments of the film is that she is, ultimately, defined by the success of her son.

The last time viewers caught a glimpse of Roger Sterling, the rakishly charming advertising executive played by John Slattery on "Mad Men," he stood naked looking out a hotel window, arms raised in a state of LSD-induced bliss.

  7. A gathering of body and soul at Cheyann Benedict's new boutique

T-shirts were once novelty items: Disneyland giveaways for deeply uncool vacationers, concert keepsakes for the young and disheveled, kitschy thrift-store finds for young women with hair in Princess Leia buns. But in the last decade the garments have transcended that reputation, becoming refined wardrobe staples for everyone, everywhere.

  19. Review: 'Struck by Lightning' is a flat coming-of-age tale

The teenage coming-of-age story gets an ever-so-slight tweak in "Struck by Lightning," written by and starring "Glee" performer Chris Colfer, whose character is, in fact, struck dead by lightning in the film's opening moments.

  23. Elle Fanning roots Sally Potter's new movie, 'Ginger and Rosa'

TELLURIDE, Colo. -- The new film “Ginger and Rosa” by English filmmaker Sally Potter screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival high in the mountains of Colorado. A tale drawn in no small part from Potter’s own life, the movie follows two young girls through a coming-of-age story set against the early '60s backdrop of nuclear disarmament protests and the Cuban missile crisis. With stirring performances by relative veteran Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert, the film is on the fall festival circuit in search of U.S. distribution.
