  5. Blu-ray Review: A bit of a 'Titanic' waste

There are literally dozens of movies about the Titanic; this 1953 Hollywood version is one of the three best-known (the other two being Roy Ward Baker's “A Night to Remember” and James Cameron's modest little 1997 chamber drama). Like Cameron, director Jean Negulesco (Fox's go-to guy for melodrama at the time), writer/producer Charles Brackett (after the severing of his amazing 12-year collaboration with Billy Wilder), and co-writers Walter Reisch and Richard Breen focused primarily on the romantic lives of fictional characters. Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb are the central pair, with Robert Wagner and Audrey Dalton representing young love.

  7. Cruise Port Spotlight: Civitavecchia in Rome, Italy

Rome, the “Eternal City,” as the saying goes, was not built in a day –and cannot be seen in a day—but often cruise passengers have only one day to enjoy it (unless they are fortunate that their voyage begins or ends in Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, and they are able arrange for an extended stay pre- or post-cruise).

  9. Independence Day TV schedule 2012

    Channel Guide Magazine
The Independence Day holiday in America falls on a Wednesday this year, which may put some people in a sort of No Man's Land, where it might be kind of hard to stretch that into a long weekend. But, if you do have any time off on and around July 4 this...

  19. On Theater: 'Sitting Pretty' isn't always pretty

"Sitting Pretty" — not to be confused with the vintage Clifton Webb movie — is a strange little British semi-comedy of frustrated characters and unfulfilled lives which somehow get sorted out via the most improbable situations. Amy...

  21. 'Cheaper by the Dozen'

"Cheaper by the Dozen" apparently means to celebrate family life, but it's as synthetic as a plastic Christmas tree. Not for a second will an only child find anything to envy about the Bakers of Midland, Ill., where a household of 12 children means that sometimes a parent cannot always address an offspring by his correct name. It's hard to imagine that director Shawn Levy and his writers, in reworking the autobiographical novel by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, intended anything but a warm holiday treat, but, if only by default, the film plays subversively.
