  1. Aardman's Peter Lord explains one frame from 'The Pirates!'

Asked to explain the Aardman Animations sensibility, asked if he could put a finger on the house style of the idiosyncratic little studio he co-founded in England 40 years ago, Peter Lord, left, dithered, then finally blurted: . There's really no other word &mdash; the man <em>dithered</em>. Then he stammered. Then he did the full Hugh Grant. Until finally, pleadingly, he blurted: "I can't explain the Aardman sensibility any better than I can explain my accent!" Then, after a bit, he added: "Here, in the States, critics just tend to explain us in terms of Monty Python."

  9. 'Coraline'

Another animated movie from the director of the Tim Burton-produced "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is likely to be edgy, too, and Henry Selick delivers again with this tale of a youngster (voice of Dakota Fanning) who enters a world that seems too good to be true.

  11. Movie Review: Monsters vs. Aliens

What does it say about the current state of cinema that " Monsters vs. Aliens," animated in a '50s retro style, albeit with an assist from the latest in 3-D technology, and aimed roughly at the under-12 set, turns out to be the movie making one of the...

  17. 'Coraline' stars the voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Keith David, John Hodgman, Ian McShane

"Coraline" may not be for all tastes and it's certainly not for all kids, given its macabre premise. But writer-director Henry Selick's animated feature advances the stop-motion animation genre through that most heartening of attributes: quality. It pulls audiences into a meticulously detailed universe, familiar in many respects, wacked and menacing in many others.

  23. Laika hopes 'Coraline' shows the stop-motion way
