  1. In a New York state of mind

I was in New York City last week.
I was in New York City last week. On Tuesday, Election Day, CNN had big screens in Times Square, and I joined the folks watching the returns. We cheered a lot, especially when CNN turned cameras on us. On Wednesday, a nor'easter struck NYC. I can't...

  3. If you haven't visited lately, Oahu's new vibe may surprise you

I'll state right away that Hawaii is one of my favorite places. I'm pretty much over the Caribbean, and although the Maldives and Fiji have beautiful beaches, getting there is expensive and time-consuming. So when it comes time for balmy weather, surf, sand, and relaxation, it's the Hawaiian Islands.

  9. A Nixonian twist to high school musicals?

    Change of Subject
A friend whose child goes to a large suburban high school tells me that the recent student production of a musical featured one kid acting the leading role but lip-synching the big songs while another kid sang off stage. In......

  11. Academy Awards: Fearless picks in a ho-hum year; why not a best-actress tie?

The TV Guy - Orlando Sentinel
Best actress: It's a two-way race between good friends Viola Davis of "The Help" and Meryl Streep of "The Iron Lady." Davis is given the edge for a fine performance in a sentimental movie. Streep is brilliant in a misguided movie. I'm pulling for Streep,...

This adaptation, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, takes us through an alternate universe set in the UK during the '80s and '90s. We meet three clones closely linked by their shared upbringing at a boarding school for their kind. At 18, Kathy H (Carey Mulligan) and friends, Ruth (Keira Knightley) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield), move into cottages with other clones. Ruth and Tommy become lovers while Kathy sees other clones through the grisly donation process. As all three await the "completion of their donation cycles," none rails against the unfairness, nor attempts to run away. The rules of this universe drains the life from a tale that is twist on both "Blade Runner," and "The Island," but that lacks the excitement of either. DVD or Blu-ray features: The secrets of Never Let Me Go, The director's on-set photography, Tommy's art, National donor program &amp; Hailsham campaign graphics, English, French or Spanish language tracks, widescreen.</span>

The TV Guy - Orlando Sentinel

  20. Oscar Sunday: Remembering John Wayne, Bette Davis, David Niven

The TV Guy - Orlando Sentinel
Year after year, the Academy Awards may be among the most ridiculed programs. Yet the telecast's allure ultimately rests in the emotional moments. If you have a bond with the performers, you can slog through the hours, the silliness and the bombast....

  22. Michael Sragow's 13 great haunted house movies

From the blog Michael Sragow Gets Reel:
    Baltimore Sun reporter
From the blog Michael Sragow Gets Reel: It hasn't been a great era for haunted-house movies. The third version of "House of Wax," in 2005, was awful enough to kill off the form, at least as far as big American studios were concerned. The day my review...
