  7. A new dawn for Tori Amos with 'Night of Hunters'

Creating something genuinely new in the classical crossover genre is, for many reasons, an endeavor fraught with peril. Classical fans are notoriously unkind to pop artists who want to have a go while pop fans often attack their icons for putting on airs. Those who live full time in the genre — Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, Blake — sell millions of records by sticking to a strict formula. Songs must have big tunes and, if at all possible, be sung in Italian; the voice must be at least vaguely operatic with lots of vibrato and the singer must be handsome in a floppy-haired, Euro kind of way.

  17. What's on these authors' summer 2011 reading list

Here at Book Review, we know what looked good to us on the summer bookshelves, but we couldn't help but wonder what some of our favorite authors were looking forward to tossing in their travel bag or bringing out to the backyard or the beach for one of those long, sunny afternoons. For many, the coming months seem to be a chance to catch up on those beguiling titles we somehow don't have time for the rest of the year but are oh-so made for summer.
