5. Cicely Tyson wore a serious gown to the Tony Awards

When Cicely Tyson took to the stage Sunday to accept her Tony Award for lead actress in a play for her role in "The Trip to Bountiful," both men who were watching with me reacted — to her dress. The ultra-structured, purple-satin creation "looks like if you touched her, it would cut you," said one. "That's just weird," said the other. They aren't fashion critics, obviously. I think the word for the gown is "formidable," as in inspiring awe and wonder. Just like the actress. So far, I've seen nothing to indicate which designer was responsible. Er, deserves credit for the look. For full coverage of the Tonys, check out our Envelope blog.

  13. Tony Awards 2013: Courtney B. Vance glad he took a chance on 'Lucky Guy'

Courtney B. Vance might not be the most famous actor in Lucky Guy – that would be Tom Hanks, who plays Mike McAlary. But the chance to play Hap Hairston, McAlary’s editor, was enough to draw Vance back to Broadway after a long absence. That’s especially true since he gets to work with director George C. Wolfe, who also directed Angels in America.
