A movie about a French stroke victim does not immediately bring to mind words such as “beautiful” and “transcendent.” But thanks to director Julian Schnabel, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, screenwriter Ronald Harwood and actor Mathieu Amalric, that is exactly how people think of “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Schnabel’s brashness and sartorial daring has been a breath of fresh air throughout the awards circuit this season, but all involved could easily be shut out at both ceremonies, left in the wake of bigger juggernauts.
