  1. GLAAD award nominees include 'Wallflower,' 'Cloud Atlas'

Among the nominations for its annual entertainment awards, GLAAD, the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy and anti-defamation organization, chose to honor animation's first gay character, a film directed in part by a transgender woman and a character who comes out of the closet in retirement.

  3. TV review: 'Real Husbands of Hollywood' are on perpetual play date

Kevin Hart's amiable, loose-limbed "Real Husbands of Hollywood," which premieres Tuesday on BET, is not so much a parody of the Bravo franchise, whose name it echoes and structure it borrows, as it is a kind of (mostly) black "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

  5. Daum: Jodie Foster comes out -- as human

It's the news the nation's been trying to digest all week (at least before Lance Armstrong made everyone lose their lunch): Jodie Foster, one of the industry's most cool and collected figures, is capable of being a rambling mess.

  7. Oscar 8-Ball: Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

Can a movie that New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick called "basically a three-hour homage to 'Blazing Saddles'" manage to pull in a few Oscar nominations? Time to check in with the Oscar 8-Ball, that magical portal into the minds and hearts and, in the rare, applicable instance, the souls of academy members and how they'll be voting this awards season.

  9. SAG Awards 2013: John Goodman on 'Argo,' Affleck and inspiration

It's been a roller coaster of an awards season for the cast and crew of the political thriller "Argo." In the weeks since director and star Ben Affleck was passed over for an Oscar nomination for best director, the film has won big at the Golden Globes, the Producers Guild Awards and now the SAG Awards.

  11. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  13. Anne Hathaway on the luck and pluck that aided her in 'Les Misérables'

Anne Hathaway has had quite a year going into the Academy Awards, at which she's strongly favored to win the supporting actress Oscar for her role as Fantine in director Tom Hooper's "Les Misérables." She got raves for her performance as Catwoman in the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises," sang for President Obama at a fundraiser in August and married actor Adam Shulman in an outdoor ceremony at Big Sur in September. And this month, she's taken home trophies from the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. It's rumored that the film's cast will perform a musical number at the Oscars; at press time, though, Hathaway said she was "still waiting to be told what to do."

  15. 'Silver Linings Playbook' set design mines the '70s

"Silver Linings Playbook," which moves from limited release to about 2,500 theaters this weekend, earned eight Academy Award nominations, including nods for actors Bradley Cooper, Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro and Jacki Weaver. But for us, one of the best characters was the house created by production designer Judy Becker.

  17. Oscars 2013: 'Argo' generates most heat, but can 'Lincoln' catch it?

With the Oscars finally upon us Sunday, it's do-or-die for the movies ranked in the L.A. Times Data Desk's HeatMeter, which tallies points at events throughout the season to gauge the overall traction of people and films. With Ben Affleck's "Argo" piling up the wins, it's taken the lead in the overall film race (which incorporates all wins for a movie, and for everyone from directors to actors to cinematographers).

  19. Oscars 2013: Early reviews on host Seth MacFarlane are not kind

If Seth MacFarlane was using Thursday’s Academy Awards nominations announcement as a test-run for his Oscar show hosting patter, he might consider changing directions. Fast.
