1. 'Backbeat' creators go beyond the standard musical theater fare

Searching for his way into the new musical "Backbeat," which examines the Beatles' early days (and nights) in Hamburg, Germany, David Leveaux asked himself what he called "the Jerome Robbins question."

5. Movie review: 'The Skeleton Key'

Tribune staff reporter
2½ stars (out of four) Horror movie heroines (and they're almost always heroines) could dramatically increase their survival chances if they would just follow three simple guidelines. Let's call them "Rules to (Literally) Live By:" 1. When house or...

7. 'The Skeleton Key'

With her light yellow hair, clear eyes and purposeful stride, Kate Hudson cuts through the boggy gloom of "The Skeleton Key" like a beam of reason. But even she is no match for the lugubrious vegetation of the Louisiana bayou outside New Orleans, which fairly quivers with dread and swampy portent. Mind you, there's also the hoodoo, which is described as a sort of DIY voodoo and is clearly something no rationalist Yankee will be able to resist. Toss in a remote, crumbling antebellum mansion full of religious iconography, a creepy attic, a permanently locked door and an all-access skeleton key and, well, I don't have to tell you.

9. The Wings of the Dove

TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday November 7, 1997 Despite a dense, convoluted writing style that makes no concessions to readers in a hurry, magisterial novelist Henry James has lately become a favorite of movie-makers. This last year has seen Jane Campion's "Portrait of a...

11. 'K-PAX'

Times Film Critic
"K-PAX" is a pleasant enough entertainment raised above its station by the quality of its acting. While the story line gets increasingly questionable, the fact that Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges are taking it seriously makes a good deal of difference. The...

13. Healthy fall crop

OK, 2001 hasn't been the greatest movie year so far, but fall tends to be the season on which top-10 lists are built. The next few months look especially crowded thanks in part to the studios having rushed movies into production in preparation for the...

15. Hackers

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
Friday September 15, 1995 "Hackers" is one of those movies that explore a cool misunderstood teen subculture with a breathtaking lack of verisimilitude. As a result, it gives you more insight into the minds of Hollywood hacks than of computer...
